Glenreagh Report for 17 May 2011
Tuesday was our big day for our 1st Aid course which took up most of the day. It was conducted by a retired School Teacher and his daughter. The following members now have their 1st Aid certificates. David Page, Colin Green, Valmai Thomson, Matt Dunne, Chris Frost, Gordon Greenbury and Max Lloyd. It is a requirement of the Rail Safety Act that a 1st Aid qualified person be in attendance at any activities taking place on our rail corridor. These members as well as other qualified members will enable us to comply.
In addition to this Lindsay spent the day mowing and I spent the day doing odd jobs including moving the telephone service to the office from the old site shed.
We again had some visitors who spent time looking over our operation with my help.
Last Thursday was our first new extra workday under the guidance of Valmai. Valmai and her helpers started moving signaling equipment to more secure storage as the current storage is being ravaged by termites.
Anyone wanting to spend time helping on Thursdays is most welcome. Just report to Valmai on site by around 8.30am and I am sure that she can find something for you to do.

Some photos of the OPTUS tower and the base station for the tower are below.
Glenreagh Report for 10 May 2011
A huge effort took place at the Cottage at Glenreagh West today.
Col Green, Lindsay Thomson, Matthew and I did several hours of tree lopping, Brush Cutting and the removal of several feral trees. We now have two very large piles of "debris" to burn when it is dry enough. The place looks great especially after the work done last Tuesday clearing the rubbish at the far end of the back yard and removing the dead and dying fruit trees.
We have also cleared the old dead shrubs in front of the Shed and planted four mature Azalea plants. These are of significance in that the root stock came from the original plant that used to be on Glenreagh station. I propagated them at home until they reached an advanced stage ready for the transplant.
Valmai has been very busy over the last few weeks cleaning the TAM which is now looking very smick.
The Workshop has been re-arranged ready for the delivery of our large antique lathe which has found a new home from State Forests.
In the first week of the School Holidays we had a group of 40 young children from Grafton visit us on our working day. They thoroughly enjoyed their visit.
The OPTUS tower has been erected and is now awaiting the installation of power. It looks very imposing.
From Thursday 12 May we will also be having a workday on Thursdays. These will be supervised by Valami. Anyone interested in attending is most welcome. There is plenty of work to do.

Lowanna Report for W.E. 1 April 2011
From David Page
The concrete footings for the new shed were poured to-day. Some photos are below.
Report for Tuesday 29 March 2011
We had a great day today.
Present were: David Page, Matt Dunne, Col Green, Valmai, Lindsay, Steve Martin and Max Lloyd, and of course the writer.
The following photo is of Lindsay with the new mower he purchased.
The remainder were of activities we undertook to make the place safer.
The Optus contractors arrived and started work. This photo is of the cleared site ready for work to commence. The hole will be 1.8 metres in diameter and 6 metres deep.
An enormous amount of work took place today. Valmai continued to work on the TAM ready for visitors in April.
Matt and Lindsay mowed although Matt spent most of the day doing maintenance and repairs on the mowers.
Max and Steve worked on the Ganger's Shed which is being set up as a display. They also worked on the information that Andrew wants for the application for Accreditation variation needed to move rolling stock.
David spent the early part of the day liaising with contractors and moved onto the excavator doing some cleaning up. The dome was put back on 1919 and the area generally cleaned up.
Colin Green spent the day on numerous tasks, as did I, preparing the safety fences and steps that appear in the photos.

Report for Tuesday 15 March 2011
Once again what a fantastic day. We had Matt and Lindsay on mowers, matt also on the brush cutter. Geoff and Valmai went off and did a stocktake on the concrete sleepers then came back and worked on removing the stumps and filling holes in the lawn. I paid a visit to Bessie Webb and learn't that Rex wants to come back. I told her we had plenty of jobs for him to do. I continued to make a list of jobs that need doing.
We have 459 concrete sleepers plus an unknown quantity located in McCarthy's mill yard.
Later in the day visited Slater and Gordon with David to sign the Optus lease. (almost got writers cramp)
Best of all, Eric completed the testing and tagging of electrical equipment. This was a huge job and involved some repairs as well. A job well done thankyou Eric.
Also, Valmai and Geoff found the portable toilet down at the creek lying on its back with wheels in the air.
Thankyou all for a great day.

Report for Tuesday15 February 2011
What a fantastic day. We managed to to an enormous amount of work.
Matthew spent all day on the brush cutter, Eric spent many hours tagging and repairing electrical items ( there are still heaps to go but we got the main shed completed) Valmai worked with Col and I putting the tarp over the LHG and then helped Eric. Chris Frost was also in attendance helping out. Col, Valmai and I went to Moleton to look at the situation there and then went on to Lowanna to inspect the station and Caretaker's area. Col also freed up the motor in the ballast regulator ready to start it. He took the battery home to see if it will charge. Col also looked at the steps for the TAM and has marked it out ready to modify it. He also looked at the trailer but we can't proceed with it until we can establish ownership.
A big thankyou to everyone for putting such a huge effort. I will be preparing a report about Moleton and Lowanna and will also prepare a report with photos for Eric to put on the Web site.
I was also very impressed with the huge turnout last Saturday. It is a long time since I have seen so many people at a working bee.

From the Secretary 16 November 2010
It has been a busy month at GMR.
The Lowanna Railway Station had a complete repaint with funds from Coffs Harbour City Council and money raised by the members. This is on top of a new roof for this building. The Station is looking great and a real credit to Council’s heritage staff and GMR members.
The Lowanna office/site shed has been moved over to the eastern boundary as per the heritage conservation management plan for the site.
GMR Board has started the process of removing all our rolling stock off DSRM land. The big move of the “water gin” from Ulong to Lowanna has been the most costly, with funds raised by members.
The next step is to prepare a restoration plan for this item, but for now it is secure with the short term plan for it to be a static display at Lowanna Railway Station.
The wet weather has been slowing down many projects at our Glenreagh Depot. Urgent drainage has finally been done to stop the flooding to the western end of the depot. Thanks to a NSW Government grant, 22m of the carriage workshop will be concreted to stop the dust and water issues.
In the coming weeks a section of track from the Orara River back towards the depot will be cleaned up with an excavator with a mulching head. This will reduce the fire risk to the southern end of the Glenreagh village and control a major weed area.
David Page Secretary Glenreagh Mountain Railway Inc.
Webmaster: You can view photograghs of the paint job, the Site Shed re-location and the Water Gin re-location if you go to the Lowanna Section.
From the Secretary 9 November 2010 All,
Another busy day, the excavator was transported to Glenreagh (truck was late) with Steve, Gordon, Kevin and me cleaned out the rest of the carriage workshop to get it ready for the concrete. Eric did the prep work to install the pump in the pit and the Optus guys turned up to do soiling testing for the tower.
Optus is talking with Eric about power usage for Glenreagh and he is heading out today to install the pump in the pit.
I find out today when the concrete guy starts work.
Thursday is looking to be a crazy day. The big excavator with mulching head arrives at 7:30am with Steve and Gordon having to get there before the birds to put flagging tape on any hazards. CVC is coming at 2.00pm to meet with myself and another Board members about community development grants.
The concrete guy could still be working on-site.
Saturday is now planned for the Megan job with Bill, Robert, Steve, John, Colin C, Gordon and myself heading up (still looking for more helpers). The recycling company is planning to remove these after the 20th as the machine is already on the mountain so time is not on our side.

Report from Colin for the week ending 11 June 2010.
Some pictures I took on Thursday 10 June 2010. We have certainly made some big inroads thanks to a small band of members, especially Valmai, Lindsay and Kevin. (from Webmaster: of course Colin. You can help with work also.)
Reports for the week ending 30 April 2010.
From Glenreagh.
Over the past two weeks a lot of progress has been made in restoring the grounds at the cottage to a reasonal level of tidiness. Last week was spent cleaning up around the house. Many thanks for all the hard work done by Valmai, Lindsay, Geoff and Eric.
This week was spent cleaning and mowing the back area which is looking good. This was done by Geoff, Valmai, Lindsay and myself. Lindsay also spent time cleaning the ceiling in the kitchen.
Many thanks once again to the band of dedicated workers for all the hard work they put in week in and week out.
Kevin
From the Webmaster We must not forget the time and physical effort put into these works by President, Kevin. If you are able to help please contact him.
From Lowanna.
This Thursday and Friday the GMR members started the repairs of the Lowanna Station roof. This has been a long time project for GMR and it is finally happening. Next Thursday the rest will be completed.
Some shots of the progress on the roof replacement.
Report from the President for the week ending16 April 2010
Today was spent cleaning up around our fettlers cottage. The outside is starting to take shape with a lot of vegetation remove from against the house. It is now possible to walk around the house without having to climb over or through a jungle of bushes and trees
My deepest thanks goes out to the crew of Valmai, Lindsay and Geoff who put in a huge effort today to achieve this result. I would also like to thank the crew who gave up their Good Friday to come to Glenreagh and spent many hours of hard work cutting down trees and bushes
Thanks Crew
Kevin
From the Webmaster
Some help for Kevin and his crew would be greatly appreciated. Please come along on Thursdays and lend a hand.
Maureen's report from Lowanna for the week ending16 April 2010
Things are moving along. Today at Lowanna we had a social club visit and we supplied them with a cuppa and some homemade cakes etc. We raised $56 from the cuppa and $28 from the sale of souvenirs. Big thank you for today to Trevor, Gordon and Gordon's friends from Sawtell who drove up just for the morning to help. We are looking forward to holding more of these types of activities to boost GMR's coffers. Bessie and the ladies had a great time with lots of laughter and then they followed it up by having lunch at Ulong RSL. Great to see everyone working together as a team, be it at Glenreagh or Lowanna. Well done all.
Report for the week ending 2 April 2010
At Glenreagh, on Thursday Kevin, our President, and Geof, spent the day cleaning up the grounds around the depot (also known as they cut the grass).
Valmai and Lindsay spent the day in the Fettler's Cottage cleaning walls and floors in preparation for painting. If you can help with either of these works it would be appreciated. Please the President or Secretary via "contact Us".
On Friday six members attacked the jungle around the Fettler's Cottage and cleared back a significant quantity of growth. You now can see the cottage. Thank you to all those who helped. For those who feel they have been left out, not to worry, there is much more to remove and we would welcome your help. If you can help please contact the President or the Secretary via "Contact Us".
This image was taken before work commenced to clear the jungle.
This image was taken at the completion of the first day. There still remains much more to be done around the property.
Ron's report for 21st january 2010
As promised, I have added 4 photos.
The area around the station was badly over grown and items of building materials were cluttering up the area. As you can see the efforts of a few have made a marked difference shown in photo 004. The other photos are furniture that was in my workshop or refurbished by John Gardner. The waiting room seating just needs a touch of paint and I will see if I can get hold of a filing cabinet to keep relevant documents and memorabilia in, in the ticket office. Bessie Webb gave me an 8 day clock seen in photo 001. Apparently it is a railway clock with mechanical winding. I will hang it in done now on the move. I am concerned that the long break over Xmas this year along with the restrictions we have had to endure, we are loosing momentum and this is being reflected in the poor turn out of members othe waiting room wall adjacent to the ticket office window so it can be seen from the ticket office.
There is little else we can do on site until we debate with council the way forward.
The whole precinct is overgrown and in desperate need of attention. The few that are turning up are trying to battle this and some progress is being made.
I took a full backpack to Glenreagh and Jeff kindly attacked sections of heavy infestation. I spent an hour or two with my line trimmer and from the sound of things so did Kevin.
I also cleared in front of the Donger Hut (the old office). We pulled some of the larger weeds and it will benefit from a mower now that most of the debris is moved.
Peter Dickson Smith has a fire permit and when he decides to burn off his rubbish from the cottage we should add the old particle board in front of the donger hut to this. All of it is weather effected and of little use now.
We further attempted to clear the area near the little platform.
The lift trolley should be stored in one of the sheds and the surrounds cleaned up.
David Page is developing a plan of action to reduce the growth around the cottage. Peter Dickson Smith tells me that he has a floor plan of the cottage and some photos of what the cottage looked like in the past.
These items will become very handy in developing the office / museum section of the plan and will show us what we are aiming for when we can restore the building to its origins as monies and resources become available in the future.
It was very disappointing to see the very few who turned up today. We need to stimulate activity within the current regulations and put in place structured activities so we can bring back the active members.
No one is coming because they cant see or don't know what can or cant be done. No one wants to put GMR into strife by doing things add hock. With a structured plan and the relevant paperwork waiting on participants ready, we may get the few things that need to be n work days.
As a board member I am asking that we as a board address these issues as soon as possible or suffer the consequences of having these wonderful assets disappear into the undergrowth.
I will continue to send out reports on what my crew and I are doing each week.
I will add this report to this site as well to keep it fresh.

Ron Well's report from Glenreagh for Thursday 14th January 2010
A small step for mankind was taken today. Richard Glasgow and I got an early start and cleared some of the debris from around the station site. While Richard used my ride on mower, I attacked the weeds with a brush cutter and line trimmer.
Kevin helped with some of the heavy dragging we needed to do in clearing bits and pieces. Brian ( the householder South of the site) has penned in a large section of the precinct with electric fencing to firstly feed his stock and secondly to reduce the weeds and long grass. It has had little effect. We need a concerted effort to bring the level of grass and weeds down to a manageable levels. Further, a weed spraying program should be developed to keep areas clear where mowing and line trimming is less than effective. I have some weed spray at home along with a back pack sprayer which I will bring fully charged next Thursday. If you can do likewise it would greatly help get the mess back under control. The rail corridor is starting to get very overgrown. The area near the water tanks once looked great with someone's gardening efforts . It can barely be seen now with weeds covering these efforts.
The station looks great internally and externally. We do have some weeds growing under the platform that look like something out of "The Day of the Triffids" I will take to these next Thursday.
Bessie Webb requested that all GMR documentation in her granny flat be removed today. These are documents from the days when the late Robin Goodenough was our Secretary. There was about ten boxes of GMR books many folders and a four drawer filing cabinet to be moved. Valmai Thomson assisted with a car load and Richard and I followed up with a trailer for the balance. Bessie gave me an eight day station clock and has other items still to be collected. There is a couple of display cases that will be ideal when we finally own the Fettlers Cottage ( Peter & Barbara's house) that need to be transported when we finally own the house..
Peter and Barbara kindly allowed me to store these records in the house even though we have not completed the purchase yet. This I'm told will happen at the end of the Month.
I'm still on light duties and had to finish up early today as the heat got the better of me. Still, we did make an impression on the site. Lots of small steps and eventually we will get the big picture.
It is understandable that activity has dropped off over the holiday season. The restrictions placed on GMR have not helped either. However there is still many things that we can do that will not breach the conditions of the Act.
When we own the fettlers house, there is a mountain of documents that will need sorting. The trees and shrubs around the building will need to be greatly reduced and cleared in places. Stored in the sheds are GMR assets that need to be catalogued and sorted. If you want to get going again then let Kevin know when you can get there and we can set up work details and procedures to get it done. Under the new legislation we (GMR) must ensure that our volunteers are working within the regulations and working safely. This means we must plan actions before hand and stick to the plan. This all must be documented and recorded. Gone are the days of turning up and getting stuck in. A plan can be quickly done and when we become proficient at this it will all happen as a matter of course. These realities will restrict what we do, but we must prove to the regulator that GMR is capable of following the legislated regulations and producing auditable documentation for these actions as is required under the Rail Safety Act 2008. In the past we have not done this and largely it was our down fall in re acquiring our accreditation.
If we have a crew we can plan the task on the day. It is pointless planning for some tasks as they will be dependant on available volunteers on the day.
Some tasks can be planned in advance but will be conditional on the volunteers having the Certificate of Competencies (COC) relative to the tasks.
If you want to get involved again,,,,Contact either Kevin Anderson (our President) on 66490951 or myself on 66543388.
I will include some photos next report.
